2017 Advanced Leadership Development Program Highlights

ASTS held its second Advanced Leadership Development Program September 24-27, 2017, attracting surgeons, physicians, administrators, and nurses along with representatives from industry who wanted to take their leadership skills to the next level.

Robert S.D. Higgins, MD, MSHA, of Johns Hopkins gave the first dinner keynote address on “Balancing the Academic and Clinical Mission,” and the next night, Christian P. Larsen, MD, PhD, of Emory University gave a talk on “The Dean’s Perspective: The Value and Costs of a Transplant Center.” The final night featured the keynote “The Challenges of Leading a Complex, Integrated Health Care Delivery System” from C. Wright Pinson, MD, MBA, the CEO of Vanderbilt Health System.

The course also featured professors from Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management on topics such as crisis management, strategic cost management, decision-making in a time of uncertainty, and talent management, as well as ASTS members speaking about topics including transplant center management and assessment, the Medicare cost report, dealing with adverse clinical events, and cost analysis in decision making for clinical cases.
