Message From The President

July 2021
The advocacy front remains busy and everchanging as we continue to address legislative and regulatory challenges. The ASTS recently submitted written and verbal responses to the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) committee responsible for looking into the transplant system to examine the economic, ethical, policy, and operational issues pertinent to organ allocation policy decisions involving deceased donor organs. In our prepared remarks, we stressed identifying national goals for the system by embracing patient benefit as an overarching goal, simplifying regulatory oversight to promote increased organ donation, optimizing organ utilization, increasing transplant numbers, improving transplant outcomes, and rekindling innovation in transplantation. We are still planning to make a presentation in September to the SRTR Task 5 group detailing ASTS’ position on transplant data collection, metrics, and their use in transplant oversight.
