Anthony Watkins, MD

Dr. Watkins is a transplant surgeon and surgical director of kidney transplant at the Transplant Institute at Tampa General Hospital (TGH). Dr. Watkins attended medical school at the University of Tennessee before completing post-doctoral training in New York, where he later worked as an assistant professor of surgery at New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine.

1. Who was your earliest professional influence?
My earliest professional influence was my grandfather who is now a retired cardiothoracic surgeon. While I didn’t meet him until I was a junior in college, I first saw him featured in Jet magazine at the age of 9 and was determined to follow in his footsteps.
2. What are you most proud of personally and professionally?
As a proud father, my personal joy comes from watching my two boys, Ayden 14, and Khalil 21, grow and become young men. Professionally, I really value the ability to make a transformative impact on patient’s lives daily.
3. What is your favorite pastime or hobby?
I am an avid music lover and have curated playlist for every genre of music - except country.
4. If not transplant, what?
I would have been a professional dancer if not a career in medicine. The moonwalk had already been taken.
5. What was the best piece of advice you have received?
Always keep GOD first
