The Heart of the Matter—An Ethics Series by UNOS: The Ethics of Death

Summary

If you haven’t been touched by death, you are fortunate, but the truth is that if you work in transplant, death is a constant companion. In this webinar, we explore The Ethics of Death with Michael Shapiro, Robert Veatch and Mary Amanda Dew. We tackle complex issues such as how death is defined through medical and legal criteria, the ethical implications of imminent death donation and when recipients choose to die.

This is the second of a multi-part series that explores ethical issues arising in transplantation. This webinar describes problems the transplant community encounters with defining death. It explains common challenges faced by medical personnel, defines the terms used when discussing death, and explores cultural beliefs about death and donation.
