ASTS is committed to improving the diversity of our transplant workforce by supporting transplant surgeons from diverse backgrounds, including groups that have been shown to be under-represented. ASTS believes that diversification of our workforce is imperative to achieving and sustaining the mission of the organization, and for developing the next generation of surgeon-scientists with expertise in health disparities research.
To this end, ASTS has created a novel partnership with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Center (MHRC) to fund an opportunity for an ASTS member at the Assistant Professor level to become a Health Disparities Research Education Program (HDREP) Scholar. The UAB HDREP program is sponsored by the UAB MHRC and is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIA, NIMHD, NCI) and targets postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty. Scholars are mentored in research training and career development and take courses on bioethics, biostatistics, epidemiology, and minority aging. There is an associated intensive grant review retreat during which each participant polishes a grant proposal that may be submitted to an external funding agency. Scholars meet once a week via video teleconferencing with fellow scholars and select faculty from UAB and across the U.S. with expertise in health disparities and research methods. The HDRTP has a strong record of successfully mentoring minority scholars.
We invite applications from women and individuals from under-represented ethnic groups who are interested in health disparities research. Eligible applicants should submit a personal statement (500 words) describing why they are interested in and how they would benefit from this opportunity, a curriculum vitae or resume, and 2 letters of recommendation (1 must be from an ASTS member in good standing).
