In Memoriam: Sherilyn A. Gordon Burroughs, MD, FACS

The American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) is shocked and saddened by the tragic death of Sherilyn A. Gordon Burroughs, MD, FACS, this past weekend. She was 48.

Dr. Gordon Burroughs was a transplant surgeon at the Houston Methodist J.C. Walter Jr. Transplant Center and Associate Professor of Surgery at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, where she served as the first physician Designated Institutional Official and the Residency Director for the Department of Surgery. She was also the Assistant Dean, Graduate Medical Education, at Texas A&M Health Science Center.

She was the current chair of the ASTS Legislative Committee and, in that capacity, also served on the MACRA Task Force. She was previously a member of the ASTS Diversity Issues Committee.

Dr. Gordon Burroughs received her undergraduate degree from Howard University and her MD from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. After an internship/residency in surgery at Howard University Hospital, she did a research fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and then a general surgery residency at Howard University Hospital. She completed her clinical fellowship in multi-organ transplant at UCLA-Dumont Transplant Center. In 2009, she joined The Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas.

A. Osama Gaber, MD, said, “The loss of Sherilyn is already weighing heavy on our hearts. She was a great friend, a dedicated transplant surgeon, and a wonderful educator. Sherilyn will always be remembered as a major part of our journey and a pillar of our program and hospital.”

ASTS President Timothy L. Pruett, MD, said, “Sherilyn was a passionate advocate for our field and our patients, and her untimely death is a loss to the transplant community. We are grateful for the time and talent she devoted to ASTS. The patient-centered initiatives the Legislative Committee is pursuing will stand as a testament to her commitments for years to come.”

Her funeral is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, March 26, at World Harvest Outreach Church in Houston.

Houston Methodist has assisted the family with setting up an account that will help support Dr. Gordon Burroughs' daughter and those caring for her now and in the future.
