Message from the President

Dr. William Chapman

Dear ASTS Member,

It's officially a new year and we are set up for success in 2023. We've already accomplished so much in January, and there is so much to look forward to as the year goes on.

On January 12-15, we went to beautiful Miami, Florida for the Winter Symposium, where we discussed hot topics in the field such as robotics programs for kidney and liver, maintaining a healthy life as a surgeon, the data on machine perfusion, and so much more! We had renowned speakers such as Dr. Ronald Busuttil, MD, PhD, who gave the Hume Lecture, and internationally recognized journalist and author Angela Saini, who gave the Najarian Lecture. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Winter Symposium Planning Committee, chaired by Karim Halazun, MD, for their hard work in putting together such a great program.

See some of our favorite moments!

Before the start of the Winter Symposium, we held our Council and Committee Chair meeting. Our committees have been working hard in 2022 and are an integral part of moving our strategic plan forward. I would like to congratulate our Business Practices Services Committee for putting on an incredibly successful Leadership Development Program this past September (the first one since 2018!), as well as completing the 2022 Compensation Survey (the first in five years!). Make sure to purchase your copy of the Compensation Survey results in the

Make sure to get your research grant applications submitted by February 15! Your research is vital to innovating and improving the art and science of transplantation. We have grants ranging from $5,000 to $100,000 open to all career levels and membership types. for more information about eligibility and application requirements

Committee nominations open in February, so be on the lookout for more information! Serving on a committee is a great opportunity to contribute to the Society and the field we all love by working on important projects with your colleagues and peers. I encourage you to submit a nomination!

I am thrilled to announce that we’ll be hosting a on April 26 and 27. I hope you will join us to urge your Members of Congress to support the Living Donor Protection Act, which removes disincentives to transplant in both insurance coverage and employment by prohibiting life, disability, and long-term care insurance companies from denying or limiting coverage and from charging higher premiums for living organ donors simply based on their status as living donors.

We will also provide two training days on April 25 and 26, to provide guidance on how to best advocate to your representative. All participants will be required to attend at least one training session.

I am so proud of the work that we have done this past year, and I am looking forward to seeing what you achieve in the year to come. I am continually impressed by your dedication to the field and to your patients, and I am so honored to serve you and the Society as your President. If you have any questions, concerns, or just want to connect with me, I encourage you to reach out to me at . I am always available to you.

Sincerely,

Will
