About

The Specialty Fellowship in Robotic Transplant and HPB Surgery trains fellows to develop proficiency in robotic donor nephrectomy, kidney implantation, hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgery, living donor hepatectomy, and liver transplantation, equipping them with advanced skills for career advancement. 

The program enhances fellows' research capabilities and academic contributions to robotic transplant and HPB surgery.  The start date of the fellowship is September 1, 2025.


    Program Duration and Structure

    The 12-month program is structured into four specialized 3-month rotation blocks, each focusing on key areas of robotic surgery:

    • Robotic Donor Nephrectomy
    • Robotic Kidney Implantation
    • Robotic HPB Surgery
    • Robotic Liver Transplantation (both donor and recipient procedures)

    In addition, the program follows a progressive technical training sequence designed around proficiency-based milestones, ensuring continuous skill development and mastery.

    Eligibility Requirements

    Prospective fellows must have:

    • Completed an ASTS-accredited Abdominal Transplant Fellowship.
    • Documented robotic surgery experience as bedside or primary surgeon in at least 50 cases.
    • Ability to meet visa and credentialing requirements in Saudi Arabia.

    Selection Process

    Fellows will be selected through a multidisciplinary team interview, ensuring a transparent and competitive application system.

    About the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre

    The King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSH&RC) is a tertiary referral hospital located in Riyadh, the capital city of Saudi Arabia. Established in 1970 on land donated by King Faisal and officially opened in 1975 by King Khalid, the hospital has grown to become a leading medical and research institution. Initially managed by the Hospital Corporation of America from 1973 to 1985, it transitioned to national administration following a Royal Decree.     The Organ Transplant Center of Excellence (OTCoE), under the leadership of Prof. Dieter C. Broering, Executive Director, is a leading facility renowned for its advanced transplant procedures. This center is staffed by 645 dedicated members, including 113 highly specialized doctors, and is equipped with cutting-edge technologies for performing a wide range of minimally invasive solid organ transplants. Since 2011, the center has achieved remarkable milestones, including 2,578 liver transplants and 3,720 kidney transplants. It has also been at the forefront of robotic surgery in transplantation, completing 1,320 fully robotic donor hepatectomies and 64 robotic recipient liver transplants, showing its commitment to pioneering medical innovations and improving patient outcomes. The center's robust team and state-of-the-art facilities contribute to its status as a leader in organ transplantation, both regionally and globally.
