Advanced Transplant Provider (ATP) Committee

Mission Statement & Committee Accomplishments

As the art and science of transplantation has grown over recent decades, so has the presence of Advanced Practice Providers in Transplant (ATPs). Nationwide today there are over 2,000 Advanced Transplant Providers working in all disciplines of transplant.  This number is rapidly growing. Advanced Transplant Providers are integral members of the transplant team that positively impact the quality of care of transplant patients and are instrumental in the growth of transplant programs.

Prior to the implementation of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) ATP Committee, no transplant surgery specialty organization existed to enhance the professionalism and education of its advanced providers. ASTS has helped to foster and nurture the existing strong working relationship between ATPs and transplant surgeons and physicians.

The mission of the ATP Committee is to offer educational  and professional development programs for Advanced Transplant Providers to optimize care, enhance the overall patient experience, and strengthen relationships between providers.

The ATP Committee’s most recent accomplishment has been to establish the ATP Certificate of Educational Achievement. The following goals and educational opportunities have been established by the ATP Committee and solidify a commitment to ATP excellence.

Short-term

  1. Increase educational opportunities for Advanced Transplant Providers at all ASTS conferences.
  2. Recruit Advanced Transplant Providers to become members of ASTS.
  3. Promote the newly developed ATP Certificate of Educational Achievement program.

Long-term

  1. Develop an enthusiastic environment that promotes training and curriculum development for Advanced Transplant Providers.
  2. Educate the transplant community on the multiple roles of ATPs.
  3. Encourage and support the use of scientific information and evidenced-based research to enhance clinical practice.
  4. Establish a strong mentorship program for advanced providers new to the transplant community.
