Purpose:
The purpose of this webinar is to introduce and outline the concept of pig to human heart transplantation. Porcine organs are being genetically engineered with the goal to create safe and compatible organs for human transplantation. Historically, this concept was hindered by foreign antigens and physiological incompatibilities of pig organs; however, with advances in the biological sciences, new tools have emerged that are powerful enough to engineer the pig genome on a previously impossible scale. During this webinar, we will learn in more detail about this engineering process, the status of the current research, the ethical considerations, and how this work may unfold and impact future organ transplantation.
