The High Risk Donor Organ: What to tell or not tell

Purpose:

The number of patients on transplant waiting lists continues to grow creating an acute shortage of donor organs. In response some programs in the transplant community have enlarged the donor organ pool by expanding the criteria for donor acceptance. These organs may be suitable for some patients on the waiting list and may shorten the wait times resulting in decreased wait list mortality. However, expanded criteria donor (ECD) organs have risk factors that may result in less than optimal graft function and complications in recipients. The overall goal of this webinar is to review the ethical considerations, risk factors, and guidelines for informed consent in the use of ECD organs.
