ASTS hosted the inaugural Comprehensive Donation after Circulatory Death Workshop at the Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation, and Education (MITIE) on May 1–2, 2018. The course was the first of its kind and was aimed at teaching attendees about all aspects of donation after circulatory death, from both a surgical and OPO perspective, through didactic lectures, discussion, and a hands-on cadaver lab. The 50-person workshop was attended by surgeons of all experience levels, OPO professionals, and industry representatives. Attendees heard from members of the ASTS DCD Task Force and invited speakers on how to set up a DCD program in their DSA, setting up and performing the DCD recovery, strategies to improve outcomes, and post-operative management. The workshop facilitated an open dialogue between surgeons and OPO professionals, especially about perceived and actual barriers to DCD organ utilization, that participants found to be extremely valuable.

Thank you to the DCD Task Force for their hard work in planning and executing the workshop:

George Loss, MD, PhD
Mark Hobeika, MD
David Foley, MD
David Axelrod, MD, MBA
Steve Hanish, MD
Cristiano Quintini, MD, PhD
Elling Eidbo (AOPO Liaison)

ASTS gratefully acknowledges our Gold Level sponsor for the DCD workshop, Novartis Pharmaceuticals, and our Silver Level sponsor, LifeGift, for making the workshop a successful educational experience.
