Second-year ASTS Fellows and select ASTS members gathered for the 12th Annual ASTS Surgical Fellows Symposium on October 5–7, 2018 at The Wigwam Resort in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Dixon Kaufman started the meeting with his Presidential Address about the value of ASTS. This was followed by panel discussions on donor and recipient matching, a presentation on the importance of surgeon wellness, and the kidney allocation system. The evening concluded with fellows engaging in two debates on alcoholic hepatitis and highly sensitized patients. A huge congratulations to each fellow that volunteered to participate and prepared for the debates.
On Saturday morning, fellows and faculty members took the fourth and final pilot exam developed by the Knowledge Assessment Committee (KnAC). The KnAC is the first committee of the Transplant Accreditation & Certification Council. Fellows and faculty scores are used to analyze the validity of the questions for the upcoming 2019 Knowledge Assessment, which will be administered to all first and second-year ASTS Fellows.
The symposium ended on Sunday with a job market workshop, where fellows had the opportunity to discuss their resume and cover letter questions with faculty members and asked for tips while searching for a job.
Thank you to the planning committee members, Dr. Irene Kim, Dr. Richard Ruiz, and Dr. Ty Diwan and program advisors, Dr. Ryutaro Hirose and Dr. Andre Dick.
ASTS gratefully acknowledges and thanks our 2018 sponsors who made this course possible.
